Only 1000 copies were ever printed by the American Baptist Mission Press in Rangoon in 1940. Smythies later related how the original paintings and blocks for printing the superb colour plates were rescued on the eve of the Japanese occupation of Rangoon. This enabled future editions to be published and thus this 1st ed became very scarce & a collectors' item. Originally intended as a concise field guide, the author, believing that in independent Burma the study of birds seemed 'doomed to stagnate', expanded this first edition later into as full and accurate as possible account of the birds of Burma. This book starts at the very beginning : the creation of the gods, and their representation on earth - from Sun, Moon and Nature worship, via the significance of the sky, the use of symbols to represent the deities, on to the animation of these symbols. Following chapters cover the androgynous origin of mankind, the phallic factor in sexual promiscuity, serpent worship, and phallicism in various religions and cultures from primitive tribes to Egypt, Ancient Greece and Rome, the Bible, Persia, Assyria, India, England and mainland Europe, and so on. The author succeeds in presenting an overview of the sexual and phallic thread throughout just about all of the major and minor religions the world has known. From the obvious (the Lingam in India) to the more surprising (phallicism in the Bible). 1941 / T Werner Laurie / London / Hardcover / 8vo / signed / AU$250.00 The Spy Who Loved Me by Ian Fleming Ian Fleming's experimental novel may be a bust to some, it is written from Vivienne's point of view. In this book Fleming captured many interesting feelings that women experience from the opposite sex. It is also the shortest of all the Fleming novels. Fleming did not like the way it turned out and asked if only the title be used for the film. Although, Horror is a great nickname for a villain. The 10th James Bond book is still much sought after, particularly because he chose to part with his accepted and successful technique of a third-person narrative. 1962 / Jonathan Cape / London / Hardcover / 8vo / AU$250.00 |
