Enid Blyton

Enid Blyton (1897-1968) Mary Pollock was probably the most successful British children's writer of the twentieth century, her prolific output of 700 books have been translated into more than 40 languages and sold in excess of 400 million copies worldwide.

Enid Blyton was born in London, in a small flat above a shop in East Dulwich, the eldest of three children. Her father, Thomas Blyton, was a prolific painter of water colours, wrote poetry, played piano, and was a accomplished photographer.

Enid Blyton's books have received much literary criticism, indeed the attitudes displayed in many of the books is considered by many as sexist and outdated. In the 1950s and 1960s Blyton was attacked by critics and librarians imposed sanctions on her writings owing to the books' limited vocabulary. Main target for anti-Blyton's was Noddy, 'the most egocentric, joyless, sniveling and pious anti-hero in the history of British fiction' wrote one such critic.
